Use one documented fuel rate for one operating condition
The calculator treats the manufacturer’s published rate as the controlling input. If a gasoline model lists runtime at one-quarter load and rated load, those are two different operating conditions. If a standby model lists natural-gas or propane flow at half and full load, choose the row that best represents the load block you are planning.
Enter fuel and rate in matching units. Gallons divided by gallons per hour produces hours. Cubic feet divided by cubic feet per hour also produces hours. Do not mix liquid propane gallons with propane-vapor cubic feet, or a metric capacity with an imperial rate, without a documented conversion.

Manufacturer data often separates half-load and full-load consumption because the engine does not use fuel at one constant rate. Calculate runtime without hiding the reserve
Usable fuel equals available fuel multiplied by one minus the reserve percentage. Estimated runtime equals usable fuel divided by the published hourly rate. With 8 gallons available, a 20 percent reserve, and a published rate of 0.5 gallon per hour, usable fuel is 6.4 gallons and the planning runtime is 12.8 hours.
That result is a planning estimate for the selected rate, not a promise that the engine will run for 12.8 hours under changing conditions. A refrigerator cycling on and off, a pump starting, eco mode, high elevation, cold weather, and deferred maintenance can move actual consumption away from the selected data point.
Break a changing outage load into separate blocks
A practical outage rarely holds one load percentage all day. Refrigeration may run continuously, a well pump may operate briefly, and cooking or heating loads may be scheduled. When the manufacturer provides more than one fuel-rate row, calculate each time block with the rate that best matches that block, then add the fuel amounts.
Keep starting watts in the electrical sizing plan, but do not treat a brief motor start as a full hour at peak load. The fuel worksheet and the wattage worksheet answer different questions. One checks energy inventory over time; the other checks whether the generator can carry running and starting demand.

Treat fuel availability as a safety constraint
A mathematical inventory is not permission to store unlimited fuel. Follow the generator manual and all local requirements for approved containers, cylinder location, ventilation, separation, and maximum quantities. CPSC advises keeping gasoline and other portable fuel containers capped in cool, well-ventilated areas outside living spaces and away from ignition sources.
Never refuel a running or hot generator. Shut it down, allow it to cool as directed, and control spills before restarting.
